WHAT IS BETA SIGMA PHI?

Beta Sigma Phi is an international organization for women spanning 23 countries and having over 250,000 members worldwide in 12,500 chapters.  Walter W. Ross founded the sorority in 1931 in Abilene, Kansas, as a reading club for his wife and her friends.  During the Great Depression, he realized a need and created this sorority as an outlet for social contact, self-development, spiritual fulfillment and opportunity for service.  Beta Sigma Phi is now the largest organization of it's kind in the world.

BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER

Benefits of membership include scholarship programs for members, their children and grandchildren, group insurance plans, conventions, group travel programs, bed & breakfast program, car rental discounts, vision program and privilege of transfer to other chapters worldwide.

SERVICE PROJECTS OF BETA SIGMA PHI

Internationally chapters contribute over 200,000 hours of time each year to charitable causes raising over $2 million annually.  Chapters contribute locally as well as to several special funds:

  • International Endowment Fund – (health research groups & charities.)
  • Disaster Relief Fund - (aids members who are victims of natural disasters.)
  • Breast Cancer Research Fund - (supports research organizations.)
  • Scholarship Fund – (awards scholarships to members, their children and grandchildren.)

Beta Sigma Phi offers women an opportunity to enrich their social lives, to advance themselves intellectually, and brings satisfaction from providing service to their community.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN AREA CHAPTERS

Currently there are thirteen Beta Sigma Phi chapters in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Each meets independently during the sorority year, but all share responsibility for our annual joint projects that include 3 city-wide events.  These include an all-chapter Friendship Night in October, a Valentine Ball in February, and our annual Founder’s Day Banquet, which celebrates our founder, as well as special members in our chapters, on the last Thursday in April.
